How does Cupping Work?
Cupping therapy is a process of applying suction cups (either glass or plastic ) to loosen tight musculature, soften fascia, and promote circulation of blood and fluids. When the natural flow of these substances is stagnant , toxic substances can build up in the tissue. It can be difficult for the body to expel these toxins on their own so cupping therapy can assist in the process.
Cupping can result in temporary circular marks that resemble bruises in the areas of application. They typically last a few minutes to a few days or up to a week, depending on how much stagnation there was in the area. This is a completely normal reaction and should be expected during a treatment and is no cause for alarm. It is important for the patient to keep the cupping area covered so as not to expose it to cold drafts which could exacerbate contraction of musculature resulting in increased pain.
Cupping is not appropriate for everyone and is available with massage based on consultation. Please let us know when scheduling if you are interested in cupping with your massage so we can schedule accordingly.
